INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW: The IRC is a lead agency responding to the Afghan evacuation and will be serving hundreds of Afghan parolees in the US this year through the Afghan Placement & Assistance (APA) program. The IRC is committed to ensuring all Afghan parolees have access to legal services to identify potential legal pathways to remain in the United States lawfully. This internship will support access to legal services for Afghan parolees through our Afghan Legal Resource Center.

LOCATION: In person at IRC Office - 1873 S Bellaire St, Suite 500, Denver, CO 80222

COMMITMENT: At least 10-15 hours per week (with opportunity for full time). June 3 - August 23, 2024

TIME: regular weekly schedule during business hours9 am - 5 pm


REPORTS TO: Immigration Services Navigator

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist with Know Your Rights presentations for APA clients
Assist in the coordination of pro se asylum clinics for Afghan parolees
Assist in the assembling and mailing of asylum applications
Assist with immigration screenings for IRC and African Community Center APA clients
Aid in the tracking of services rendered or needed for APA clients
Conducting and maintaining strong country conditions research to support Afghan clients
Support the Immigration Services Navigator with client communications
Support the Immigration Services Navigator with document collection and retention * Other duties as assigned.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The intern will gain professional experience providing technical assistance and programmatic support to the Afghan Legal Resource Center.
The intern will deepen understanding of asylum law and policy
The intern will gain practical experience working in a fast-paced environment for a large NGO in a challenging policy environment for refugees and immigrants


Minimum Qualifications:

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong interest and experience working in immigration and refugee issues.
  • Very strong written communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a concise, accessible way.
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and manage time effectively.
  • Dari / Pashto speaker preferred

This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
