DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Fitness Operations

  • Performs a variety of duties associated with personal training and instructing or leading small group fitness programs.
  • Provides a safe, effective, and supportive learning environment for diverse participants with varying skills and fitness levels.
  • Stays abreast of latest trends and techniques in areas of expertise. Evaluates fitness programs for effectiveness and recommends new training styles, techniques, or classes.
  • Plans personalized fitness programs, small group curriculum and conducts personalized sessions or small group instruction in areas of expertise. This may include selecting exercises, designing individualized fitness programs, choreography and creating music playlists.
  • Ensures clients and participants are performing exercises correctly and safely.
  • Uses knowledge and expertise to modify fitness programs and small group activities for various client and participant skill levels.
  • Sets up and takes down required program equipment including exercise and audio equipment.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintains program related records and reports, including accurate client session totals and class attendance records.
  • Provides exceptional guest service to all clients and participants. Responds to information requests, comments and complaints from clients and participants.
  • Maintains frequent communications with other staff within the Community Center and Division and reports any issues or concerns with inventory, facility conditions, policies and incidents to supervisory staff as needed.

Other/Miscellaneous

  • Ensures the safety of guests and program participants by enforcing all rules and policies with staff and guests.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and trainings.
  • May be considered as a subject expert for area of specialization and may train other staff on specific knowledge.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

CPR/AED/First Aid

Personal Trainer I

High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required

One (1) year of personal training experience preferred

Minimum of one nationally accredited personal training certification (NASM, ACE, AFFA preferred) or the ability to obtain a personal training certification within six months of hire

Ability to obtain CPR, AED and First Aid within three months of hire.

Personal Trainer II

High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required

Three (3) years of personal training experience preferred

Minimum of one nationally accredited personal training certification (NASM, ACE, AFFA preferred).

CPR, AED and First Aid certification

Personal Trainer III

High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required

Six (6) years of personal training experience

  • Minimum of one nationally accredited personal training certification (NASM, ACE, AFFA).

  • Minimum of one specialized personal training certification (CES, CSCS).

CPR, AED and First Aid certification

Personal Trainer IV

Bachelor's degree and/or Master's Degree in exercise science, kinesiology, exercise physiology or other fitness field.

Ten (10) years of personal training experience

  • Minimum of one nationally accredited personal training certification (NASM, ACE, AFFA).

  • One or more specialized personal training certifications (CES, CSCS).

CPR, AED, and First Aid certification

A combination of education, experience, and certifications may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of: To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate exceptional leadership and communication skills and must possess expert knowledge of the principles, practices, trends and methods of recreational fitness and wellness operations and programming in a community setting. Knowledge of guidelines and regulations related to Department, Town, County, State, and Federal policies and procedures also required.

Skills in: Initiative and decision-making; verbal and written communication; supervision, leadership, and interpersonal relationships; basic financial methods of recreational programming; outstanding customer service to a diverse population; administrative functions; time management, meeting deadlines, responding to internal and external requests in a timely manner; the use of standard office equipment, computers, and various software programs; positive and professional working relationships with all Town staff and the community; conflict resolution; handling controversial issues; comprehending instruction, correspondence, and policies and procedures; problem solving; remaining composed in emergency situations and working effectively under stressful circumstances; performing CPR, First Aid, and AED to level of certification.

Physical Factors:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand and walk for long amounts of time per shift. The employee may rarely have tasks requiring running or sitting. Tasks require lifting, pushing, and pulling of objects weighing up to 30 pounds. The employee will be required to perform repetitive motion tasks when helping clients and setting up workout areas. Often required to bend over, kneel, and stoop down to the floor. The employee will be required to grasp and reach for exercise equipment for long periods of time. Tasks often include being able to move in all directions with clients while sustaining varying amounts of weight.

Environmental Factors:

Work is performed indoors, in a gym environment. Work will involve communication with clients while performing multiple tasks. Tasks require indoor work with moderate to high noise levels. Tasks require adequate vision to spot incorrect forms in clients.
