Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Custodial Services department is seeking a full-time Assistant Manager, who is responsible for ensuring all daily custodial routines are completed by assigning tasks and conducting quality assurance inspections. The Assistant Manager is responsible for approximately 15 cleaners during their assigned shift and will continuously move throughout the Museum to ensure the tasks are completed.

Applicants should demonstrate solid customer service and written/verbal communication skills. They should be proficient at using computers and effectively and efficiently balance multiple tasks under pressure. The strongest applicants will have great human relations skills and a combination of technical housekeeping experience and administrative skills, which will enable them to train and motivate staff, plan and organize workflow, prepare reports, solve problems and ensure all work is completed in accordance with standards.

Job duties include:
  • Routine inspection throughout areas of responsibility.
  • Act as liaison between the Custodial Services department and staff/visitors.
  • Control supply and equipment distribution and collection.
  • Flex schedules based on daily needs and staffing.
  • Performing training classes with Custodial staff.
  • Plan and schedule project work.
  • Monitor staff attendance.

The expected salary range for the Assistant Manager, Custodial Services is $58,500/annual - $60,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 3 years experience in housekeeping/custodial services.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree.
  • 5 years experience in housekeeping/custodial services.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and materials.
  • Knowledge of OSHA procedure/standards.
Physical Demands
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:
      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward, or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
  • Must be comfortable working in an environment where there is potential exposure to adverse conditions such as flooded areas and severe weather, or where there could be dramatic changes in temperature and climate within the facility.
