Job Title: Genetic Counselor Assistant

Job Summary:

The Adult Medical Genetics Program is seeking a highly organized and professional individual to join our team as a Genetic Counselor Assistant (GCA). The ideal candidate will have an interest in clinical and research genetics, as well as an ability to take initiative and problem-solve. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who is eager to learn, can effectively communicate and collaborate with a diverse team, and is committed to providing excellent patient care.

The GCA supports the Adult Medical Genetics Clinical and Research Programs. This position is designed for someone desiring broad experience with clinical and research genetics in anticipation of considering a future career as a genetic counselor. The GCA works with other members of the clinical team, which includes a medical geneticist and two genetic counselors. The GCA contributes to the management of diverse aspects of the clinic, including the coordination of care for patients, optimization of clinic and operational workflows, and working collaboratively with the team to create a patient-centered environment. The GCA also works to assist coordination of various ongoing research genetic registries and clinical trials.

This is a good position to consider as a stepping-stone to applying for genetic counselor master's programs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Obtaining/abstracting medical records for appointments.
  • Triage referrals and coordinate insurance coverage for genetic testing for patients.
  • Prepare letters of medical necessity with guidance from a genetic counselor
  • Provide patients and families with updates about insurance authorizations, decisions, and status of testing.
  • Assist with appointment scheduling and phone inquiries related to genetic services.
  • Assist with patient chart review and case preparation for genetic counselors and other clinicians, as directed.
  • Assist with patient follow-up letters regarding testing results.
  • Identify and recruit patients for ongoing research registries and clinical trials, including gene therapy trials.
  • Data entry into our lysosomal storage disease patient registry
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Location:

Hybrid - this role is eligible for a hybrid schedule of 3 days per week on campus in Aurora, CO and as needed for in-person meetings.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • One (1) year of clinical healthcare experience.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or health related field.
  • Genetic Counseling Assistant training.
  • Experience with electronic data capture systems (e.g. EMR or EHR and data management systems).
  • Experience working within a healthcare setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment and leadership ability to advance diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Proficient knowledge of clinical outpatient settings.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work independently and multi-task.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as $47,813 - $55,846.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
