Nature of Work

The Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL) is a 94-bed adult inpatient psychiatric facility operated by the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) located in Denver, CO that provides excellent psychiatric care to a vulnerable patient population. As one of the State's two mental health hospitals, CMHIFL serves a highly diverse patient population and embraces a recovery-oriented and trauma-informed approach to care. You will join us during an exciting time of growth as we increase bed capacity and diversify the patient population served to include both civil and forensic patients.

The Staff Physician will be responsible for providing medical care to hospital patients and supporting programs in the Medical Services and Medical Staff work units.

While Staff Physicians are considered University of Colorado contract employees within the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Fort Logan (CMHIFL), they are expected to adhere to CMHIFL policies, procedures, and Medical Staff Bylaws. Prior to hire, psychiatry providers must be deemed eligible to practice in a State institution and must pass background and drug screen. Prior to beginning clinical work, psychiatric providers are expected to attend and complete any and all training required by CMHIFL.

The Colorado Department of Human Services may decide not to renew the services of a physician or medical professional for any reason by providing the University of Colorado at Denver with written notice of nonrenewal by May 1st of each year, effective June 30th.

Unsatisfactory performance of the duties identified above may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination. In the event of termination, the State's obligation for payment ceases on the date of termination.

Examples of Work Performed

The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides medical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of patients. Performs urgent evaluations and treats unscheduled patients in medical clinical or on patient's unit and arranges disposition.
  • Works with various members of the psychiatry treatment team to engage the patient in the treatment of their medical illnesses. Collaborates with other members of the medical staff and outside consulting physicians in the evaluation and treatment of patients. Refers patients to other medical providers and/or hospitals as necessary.
  • Communicates effectively with team members and other hospital staff.
  • Follows proper documentation policies including medical necessity for patient treatments. Remains up-to-date with documentation as described in policy.
  • Screens potential admissions for medical appropriateness (e.g., medical clearance).
  • Provides staff education, instruction and mentoring. Serves on various committees to assist the hospital in its mission and goals.
  • Complies with Medical Staff Bylaws, Medical Staff Rules & Regulations, Medical Staff Practice Protocols
  • Maintains active clinical staff privileges and current license.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. Provides clinical coverage to colleagues as needed.
  • Assists with On-Duty "OD" physician recruitment, selection, on-boarding, orientation & oversight. Regularly reviews the quality of work, and provides feedback. Assists with communication to improve awareness about hospital related matters and to improve performance.
  • Supports Employee Health related initiatives, COVID response, and the development policies, procedures and facility guidance.
  • Participates or chairs hospital committees, workgroups, projects and initiatives as assigned.
  • Participates in Peer Review activities.
  • Provides site coverage for "Code-Blue" emergency response and stabilization of medical emergencies. Provides after-hours medical back-up ("MOD") and after-hours and weekend OD coverage as needed.
  • Provides clinical coverage to colleagues and while doing so, ensures all required duties and paperwork are addressed within required timelines and in accordance with Medical Staff Practice Protocols

Supervision Exercised

This position may supervise other employees depending on the nature of the assignment. This position may include mentoring other providers, graduate students, and/or postdoctoral fellows.

Salary and Benefits:

Senior Instructor/Senior Clinical Instructor: The salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established at $223,300 - $234,465.

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or DO General Practitioner / Family Practice / Internal Medicine or other related specialty
  • Graduation from an accredited School of Medicine.
  • Unrestricted Colorado Medical License
  • Current DEA Certificate
  • AHA BLS for healthcare providers

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certification by relevant certification board
  • Experience providing medical management of psychiatric inpatients
  • Exceptional Interpersonal Skills
